Differences Between Open-Cell and Closed-Cell Spray Foam

Choosing between open-cell and closed-cell spray foam depends on your needs. Each type offers unique features to improve energy efficiency and comfort in your home.

Open-Cell Spray Foam: Features and Uses

Open-cell spray foam is light and flexible. It uses tiny bubbles that trap air, which helps to insulate your home. This type of insulation works well for areas like attics and walls in Des Moines homes.

It fills gaps easily, reducing drafts and improving indoor comfort.

This foam also reduces noise from outside. Its soundproofing ability can make your home quieter and more relaxing. Open-cell spray foam suits Iowa’s changing weather by helping manage humidity levels too.

Choose this option if you need energy-efficient insulation that handles moisture well.

Seal every crack with open-cell spray foam for a cozier, quieter home.

Closed-Cell Spray Foam: Features and Benefits

Closed-cell spray foam insulation offers strong benefits for Iowa homes. It has a higher R-value than open-cell foam, providing excellent energy efficiency. This means better heat resistance and lower heating and cooling bills during hot summers or cold winters in Des Moines.

Its dense structure also makes it water-resistant, helping to prevent moisture issues like mold growth in basements or crawl spaces.

The rigid form adds strength to walls, reducing drafts and air leakage. It seals gaps tightly, keeping your home comfortable year-round while supporting better indoor air quality. Closed-cell spray foam works well for areas that need extra durability or protection against the elements.

Explore its uses next as we discuss how it suits Iowa’s unique climate needs!

Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation for Iowa’s Climate

Iowa’s seasons can be extreme—hot summers and freezing winters strain your home’s energy systems. Spray foam insulation Des Moines helps keep your house comfortable while cutting heating and cooling costs year-round.

Superior Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings

Spray foam insulation lowers heating and cooling costs. It fills gaps and stops air leaks, saving energy all year long. Homes in Des Moines with this insulation reduce heat flow, keeping warm air inside during winter and cool air trapped during summer.

You also save money on utility bills because your HVAC system works less. According to experts, homeowners can cut up to 30% off energy expenses by installing spray foam insulation.

Next, discover how it improves indoor comfort and air quality!

Enhanced Indoor Comfort and Air Quality

Proper insulation stops drafts and keeps your home at a steady temperature. Spray foam insulation seals gaps better than fiberglass, keeping out cold Iowa winds. This means fewer chills in winter and cooler rooms in summer.

It also improves air quality by blocking dirt and pollen from entering your home. Mold growth decreases too since spray foam resists moisture buildup. You will breathe cleaner, healthier air every day indoors!

Common Application Areas for Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation works wonders in many parts of your home. It helps seal gaps to keep your living spaces cozy and energy-efficient.

Attics and Ceilings

Attics and ceilings lose the most heat if not insulated well. In Iowa’s Zone 1, insulation needs an R-value of R30 to R49. For Zone 2, aim for R49 to R60. Spray foam fills gaps better than fiberglass or cellulose insulation.

This creates a tight seal that blocks drafts and cuts energy loss.

Using attic spray foam in Des Moines also prevents moisture buildup. It helps protect against mold and wood rot during humid summers. Closed-cell spray foam strengthens ceilings too by adding rigidity to the structure.

Ready your walls with proper insulation next!

Walls and Basements

Spray foam insulation boosts comfort in your walls and basements. Iowa homes face cold winters and humid summers. This can lead to drafts, mold, or high energy bills. Closed-cell spray foam works best in these areas.

It creates a strong barrier against moisture, pests, and air leaks.

You will see lower heating and cooling costs with proper insulation. Walls benefit from R13 ratings while basements need added protection for durability. Spray foam also improves indoor air quality by sealing gaps where allergens sneak through.

Crawl Spaces and Pole Barns

Crawl spaces often trap moisture, leading to mold and weak floors. Using spray foam insulation in crawl spaces prevents dampness and keeps pests out. In Iowa’s Zone 4, an R19 floor rating is key for energy savings during cold winters.

Pole barns lose heat fast without proper insulating materials. Closed-cell spray foam seals gaps tightly while adding strength to walls. This helps maintain steady temperatures and fights corrosion inside.

My husband and I moved into a new construction home on November 1st. We were not part of the building process; it was a quick move. We realized shortly after moving in that the garage was not insulated. I made some contacts with various insulation companies and Scott Todd was the only one that got back with me and assured me he could get the job done in a couple weeks. Scott stuck to his promise and did a great job. What stands out in my mind the most was how polite, honest and hard working Scott is. I’d definitely recommend his service for your insulation needs.

I discovered Precision while scrolling through FB. I’m very happy that I did. Scott arrived at my home within hours- not days, to discuss our insulation project. He provided me with some thoughtful education and advice prior to my decision. In the end, they did a great job and I would gladly use Precision again and highly recommend.

We wanted our garage to maintain a decent temperature during the winters and realized our ceiling was not insulated and heat was escaping as it was onlydrywall screwed into the rafters. Scott, the owner over and gave us several options as how to make it hold the heat in the garage along withadding some more structural stability to the rafters. Here are the options he gave us 1. R49 blown fiberglass 2. Spay foam 2" closed cell foam 3.. Both 1 & 2 blown fiberglass over the cell foam What I really liked about these options is how he said Why don't we start with one and go with the closed cell foam first. Let's see how that works and if you're satisfied we won't need to do anything else. If it's still not holding the heat you want then could come back and put some blown-in fiberglass on top. So far the heater that's set in the garage is set at 50° and it runs 5 minutes every hour where it used to run 5 minutes every 15 minutes in an hour. Note: before we had the insulation installed We also installed green hinges on our garage doors that make our doors air tight because they're spring-loaded. I would highly recommend Scott and Precision insulation and heating if you're looking for an honest, responsive owner who won't oversell you and is reasonably priced and extremely professional. Here are a few pictures of before and after.

Scott and his crew did an amazing job insulating our attic and the area above our garage using spray foam and blown-in fiberglass. We had plumbing above the garage that would slow down on extremely cold days, along with a few cold spots in the ceiling caused by gaps from poor original installation by the home builder. Since the work was done, those issues are completely resolved. The difference is noticeable, and we honestly wish we had done this sooner. I would highly recommend Scott and his company to anyone looking for high-quality insulation work.

I had Precision Insulation out to inspect my attic and evaluate temperature issues in my home. Their technician was extremely knowledgeable, thorough, and honest. He used thermal imaging to show exactly where heat loss was occurring and explained everything in a clear, straightforward way that actually made sense. What I appreciated most is that he didn’t try to upsell anything or push unnecessary work. His recommendations were practical and realistic for my situation, and the findings aligned perfectly with what I was experiencing in my home. It’s rare to find a contractor who takes the time to educate you, answers every question, and is genuinely focused on what’s best for the homeowner. Highly recommend Precision for insulation evaluations and honest expertise. I felt confident and informed after the inspection, which is exactly what you want when dealing with home performance issues.
