The blazing summers and bone-chilling winters of Iowa can wreak havoc on your metal building. Without proper insulation, it can turn into an oven in July and a freezer in January. The result is uncomfortable indoor temperatures and rising utility bills.

As an experienced home insulation contractor in Iowa, Precision Insulation & Coatings recommends proper insulation for metal buildings. Quality insulation acts as a barrier against condensation and also keeps your space dry and damage-free. Whether it is a warehouse, workshop, or a large commercial space, your building needs protection.

To know more about Home insulation contractors, this guide has been created, which will provide you with in-depth knowledge about insulation and how our professionals will help you. Let’s go ahead and read it!

Understanding Metal Building Insulation in Iowa

Iowa’s climate isn’t gentle. It continues to bounce back and forth between bitter cold snaps and sweltering humidity, putting stress on your metal building. That is why insulation is required, which creates an energy-efficient and comfortable space for you. Whether you keep farm equipment in Ames or a metal barn, spray foam insulation acts as your financial backstop throughout every month.

Why Does It Matter?

Insulating your metal building matters, especially if you live anywhere in Iowa. It not only keeps the temperature consistent throughout the year but also makes the entire structure work smarter.  Some of its benefits are discussed below:

  • Reduced workload on the HVAC system
  • Decreased carbon footprint
  • Increased energy efficiency
  • Improved air quality
  • Protection against moisture

How to Prevent Condensation in Metal Buildings in Des Moines

Condensation is one of the major problems faced by property owners. It can quietly destroy a building from the inside out by corroding steel, damaging tools, and promoting mold growth.

Closed-Cell Spray Foam

Closed-cell spray foam is a low-expanding, rigid spray foam insulation that creates a dense, continuous barrier against moisture intrusion and energy loss. Unlike other insulation materials, it hardens after application, that make it ideal for areas prone to moisture or limited space, like basements and exterior walls.

Closed-cell spray foam seals gaps, cracks, joints, and penetrations that often allow conditioned air to escape. It reduces the risk of mold growth, water damage, and material deterioration. Moreover, it can increase the structural strength of the property, which makes it valuable for agricultural buildings, metal structures, warehouses, and commercial facilities.

 Benefits of Closed-Cell Spray

  • Durability and Strength: It hardens into a rigid material that physically bonds to the surfaces it’s applied to, increasing the overall integrity of the structure.
  • High-Thermal Efficiency: Its high R-values make it perfect for maximizing space without sacrificing appearance.
  • Moisture and Vapour Barrier: Because of its dense, non-interconnected cell structure, it is impermeable to water and prevents mold, condensation, or rot.
  • Low Expansion Rate: Its controlled expansion makes it suitable for tight or shallow cavities like van walls, tiny home framing, and metal structures.

Metal Roof Coating Systems

Another solution to reduce condensation is metal roof coating systems. These are specialized membranes that cure to form a continuous, seamless seal over existing metal panels, seams, and fasteners. They act as a high-performance protective shield to prevent rust, stop leaks, block UV radiation, and improve energy efficiency.

Benefits of metal roof coating systems are:

  • Extended Roof Life: It extends the roof’s lifespan by protecting the metal from environmental stressors.
  • Improved Energy Efficiency: This coating reduces the workload on the HVAC system, which results in improved overall energy efficiency.
  • Cost Savings: It contributes to long-term savings by increasing your roof’s life and cutting down on energy bills.
  • Enhanced Aesthetic Appeal: A fresh coating enhances the look of your structure by offering a modern and polished appearance.
  • Environmental Impact: By reducing the carbon footprint, this coating benefits the environment, making it an eco-friendly choice.

Metal Building Insulation Process

The metal building spray foam insulation is a simple process that includes only four steps:

Initial Consultation

In the first and foremost step, detailed information about what your building is used for, what problems you are facing, and what your requirements are is collected.

On-Site Evaluation

The next step involves a careful on-site examination of your property to measure, assess, and identify the problem areas such as leaks, rust, or heat loss points.

Customized Plan & Estimate

In the third step, designing a custom insulation plan is important that fits your space and budget. You will get an upfront, transparent estimate without any hidden surprises.

Professional Installation

We install every project with precision and attention to detail, ensuring maximum performance and longevity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. How to install closed-cell spray foam?

Ans. It is installed by spraying a pressurized, heated chemical mixture os isocyanate and polyol resin onto a surface. The liquid reacts, expands, and hardens into a dense, rigid plastic that acts as a powerful thermal insulator, vapor barrier, and air seal.

Q2. What is the R-value of 2 inches of closed-cell foam?

Ans. Two inches of closed-cell foam provides an R-value between 12 and 14, approximately. As this material averages about R-6 to R-7 per inch, it gives you one of the highest insulating capabilities for its thickness, while acting as a rigid air and vapour barrier.

Q3. How long will closed-cell foam last?

Ans. The closed-cell spray foam is highly durable and can last up to 40 to 80 years. Because it forms a rigid, high-density structure after its application, it resists moisture, mold, and physical degradation and does not sag or settle over time.

Q4. Does closed-cell foam burn?

Ans. It will burn if exposed to a direct flame or extreme heat, as no insulation is entirely fireproof. However, it is highly fire-resistant. Most high-quality foams are treated with flame retardants and are designed to self- extinguish once the heat source is removed.

My husband and I moved into a new construction home on November 1st. We were not part of the building process; it was a quick move. We realized shortly after moving in that the garage was not insulated. I made some contacts with various insulation companies and Scott Todd was the only one that got back with me and assured me he could get the job done in a couple weeks. Scott stuck to his promise and did a great job. What stands out in my mind the most was how polite, honest and hard working Scott is. I’d definitely recommend his service for your insulation needs.

I discovered Precision while scrolling through FB. I’m very happy that I did. Scott arrived at my home within hours- not days, to discuss our insulation project. He provided me with some thoughtful education and advice prior to my decision. In the end, they did a great job and I would gladly use Precision again and highly recommend.

We wanted our garage to maintain a decent temperature during the winters and realized our ceiling was not insulated and heat was escaping as it was onlydrywall screwed into the rafters. Scott, the owner over and gave us several options as how to make it hold the heat in the garage along withadding some more structural stability to the rafters. Here are the options he gave us 1. R49 blown fiberglass 2. Spay foam 2" closed cell foam 3.. Both 1 & 2 blown fiberglass over the cell foam What I really liked about these options is how he said Why don't we start with one and go with the closed cell foam first. Let's see how that works and if you're satisfied we won't need to do anything else. If it's still not holding the heat you want then could come back and put some blown-in fiberglass on top. So far the heater that's set in the garage is set at 50° and it runs 5 minutes every hour where it used to run 5 minutes every 15 minutes in an hour. Note: before we had the insulation installed We also installed green hinges on our garage doors that make our doors air tight because they're spring-loaded. I would highly recommend Scott and Precision insulation and heating if you're looking for an honest, responsive owner who won't oversell you and is reasonably priced and extremely professional. Here are a few pictures of before and after.

Scott and his crew did an amazing job insulating our attic and the area above our garage using spray foam and blown-in fiberglass. We had plumbing above the garage that would slow down on extremely cold days, along with a few cold spots in the ceiling caused by gaps from poor original installation by the home builder. Since the work was done, those issues are completely resolved. The difference is noticeable, and we honestly wish we had done this sooner. I would highly recommend Scott and his company to anyone looking for high-quality insulation work.

I had Precision Insulation out to inspect my attic and evaluate temperature issues in my home. Their technician was extremely knowledgeable, thorough, and honest. He used thermal imaging to show exactly where heat loss was occurring and explained everything in a clear, straightforward way that actually made sense. What I appreciated most is that he didn’t try to upsell anything or push unnecessary work. His recommendations were practical and realistic for my situation, and the findings aligned perfectly with what I was experiencing in my home. It’s rare to find a contractor who takes the time to educate you, answers every question, and is genuinely focused on what’s best for the homeowner. Highly recommend Precision for insulation evaluations and honest expertise. I felt confident and informed after the inspection, which is exactly what you want when dealing with home performance issues.
